The series is named after its protagonist, Max Payne, a New York City police detective who became a janitor after his family was killed by drug dealers. The first and second installments of the series were written by Sam Lake, while Max Payne 3 was written primarily by Dan Houser of Rockstar Games. The first game in the Max Payne series was released in 2001 for Microsoft Windows and in 2002 for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Apple Macintosh; A different version of the game was released in 2003 for Game Boy Advance. A sequel called Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne was released in 2003 for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Windows. In 2008, an adaptation of the film was released, which was based independently on the original game, titled Max Payne, distributed by 20th Century Fox, starring Max Payne and Mona Sachs, respectively. The renegade DEA agent and former New York police officer, Max Payne, attempts to prosecute those responsible for the murder of his wife and son, as well as convicted him for the murder of his partner Alex Balder. As the story unfolds, he wins a series of "allies", including a Russian mafia gangster named Vladimir Lem and Mona Sachs, a vigilante woman who follows the death of her twin sister, Lisa. Passos returns when Giovanna and Max are being chased by Cratchow Prio at a bus station and saves Giovanna, but leaves without Max.
